Standing 'O' for our debut!
We surprised the audience of mostly barbershop singers when we wrapped up the recent Novice Quartet Festival. If we exceeded their expectations for a new chorus, so did their response outstrip ours! Ganaraska Chordsmen performed in public for the first time at the Festival held at the Port Hope Lions' Centre on Sept 25. While it was primarily a quartet competition among Barbershop Harmony Society chapters from Quinte, Peterborough, Oshawa and Northumberland Hills plus the Sweet Adelines Northumberland chapter, their respective choruses added to the entertainment. We sang Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah (arr. Jordan Travis) followed by You Raise Me Up (words & music by Brendan Graham & Rolf Løvland, arr. Joe Liles). Both are inspirational and coupled with an unexpectedly good performance under our award-winning director Lynn Brown roused much of the audience to its feet after each one. No other chorus was so warmly applauded. |
Logo Evolves
We are getting green shirts with the logo embroidered on the front. The low brightness green of the logo as it was below does not contrast well with the shirt colour so a "neon" green thread was selected. That makes it pop out nicely, even against a white background so the online logo has been tweaked accordingly. For added online fun, click on the image above to open it alone in your browser to see one of the Ganaraskals "wink". This new logo (above) will appear on our first publicity brochure come September, 2015 and on our website and other materials replacing the initial one (below) previously used only on the website banner. Perhaps the earlier tried too hard to respond to too many objectives:
The new logo is cleaner and more fun while preserving the blue and green colours symbolic of the Ganaraska region. It works better on a variety of backgrounds and fits a circle better. Searching with Google for similar images of rotated and mirrored bass clefs turns up no prior usage so these "Ganaraskals" and letter substitutes may be first ever. |
A Cappella Fellas on 89.7FM
Listen to Northumberland Community Radio 89.7FM for 15-25 minutes of a cappella singing every Thursday around 7:30 AM, presented by Ganaraska Chordsman Rick Faulkner in the "A Cappella Fellas" segment of Jim Glover's morning show. Call into or email the radio station to express your support that it continue. Northumberland 89.7 |
Rehearsals at Terry Fox PS, Cobourg
The Ganaraska Chordsmen will be rehearsing at a new location starting September 15: the Music Room at the Terry Fox Public School in Cobourg. It has excellent acoustics with permanent risers to let the Music Director hear and see all members of the chorus better than ever. We will have this room throughout the 2015/16 school year on all nights the school is open, unless it is required for school use. Terry Fox PS is conveniently located near the Burnham St./401 interchange, has lots of parking and is fully accessible. For our formative year, we have been fortunate to have been allowed by the Port Hope River's Edge Condominium Board to use their party room. It has served us well but cannot handle the significant expansion of the chorus we aim for in the coming months. |
